Your "Why" Determines Your "When"

First, let us say "Happy New Year!" 2012 flew by bringing joy, pain, growth, celebration, trials, community, and so much more! Cornerstone Leadership Solutions is looking forward to 2013 and all the exciting endeavors to come.
We are all accustomed to deciding and sharing our new year’s resolutions. I think we too are ready to mentally write off most people's resolutions. I could write on the power of goal setting to help aid in the commitment and strategy of achieving our goals, I could write top 5 lists to shortcut results.  However, we know that long-term and sustainable change comes from a strong knowledge of "why."

When asked people's goals for 2013 we'd hear "lose weight", "pay off debt", "quit smoking", and other good generic goals.  If I asked "Why do you want to achieve that?" Most people would respond with "I don't know. I just know I should" or "My doctor said I need to." These are legitimate reasons, but not enough to make a real change.

In 2012, I witnessed the transformation of a friend who lost 90lbs. In an appointment with his doctor, his doctor told him, "If you don't lose weight, you'll die." This shook my friend up. His father died about his age. My friend has other health issues. For one reason or another, his hopeless attitude changed in an instant. His "why" was a hunger for life and a rejection of early death. He wanted to find a wife, spend time with friends, and achieve other personal goals. He built a very long why list.

Everyone's "why" will be different. That's good! None of us are motivated by the same things in the same way.  If you want to achieve a resolution this year, ask "why?” Then ask again. Make it so strong that "I can't" will never appear. When you discover your "why" you'll achieve your "when."

It is when we become our true selves, the people we were meant to be, can we find our “why”. That’s what we are passionate about at CLS.
