It Takes Strategy to Become Exceptional

By Nat Crawford

Remember Casey Kasem's tag line, "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars!" Strategy does just that for your audacious goals.
What would you say to someone who wanted to transform a desert with 120-degree heat into a first-class city? “You’re nuts!” is probably the reasonable response. After that gut-level response, you’d probably suggest having a solid, thought out strategy. That is exactly what Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum. His exceptional strategy and vision has brought in unparalleled sums of capital to the development of Dubai.

Sheik wants Dubai to be the business and financial capital of the world. To achieve this he has create strategies to entice businesses and investors to come to Dubai. He has offered zero tax incentives, hands off government regulations, and substantial corporate enticements to businesses willing to relocate.

Not only is Sheikh’s goal to become the business capital of the world, but also the awe-capital, similar to Las Vegas. Apartments and office buildings tower over the landscape, presenting an industrial masterpiece to the eye.  It is quite the contrast to the desert surrounding it. Dubai has the tallest skyscraper, largest shopping center, the highest indoor ski slope, and the world’s only 7 star hotel, Burj Al Arab.

When you are an effective leader, you will have both marginal and impossible goals. The bigger and more difficult the goal, better strategies are needed. Vision without a road map will lead nowhere…fast. Remember, even when you have your road map, you must take action. Strategy is a tool. A tool without someone using it is useless.

If you want it, then see it. If you see it, plan how to get it. Now take the first step and go!

What is something you want? What are your strategies to get it?
