I just finished a phone call with my friend and founder of The Center for Influential Leadership, Dr. Michael Frisina. He shared this photo with me:
This picture reiterated an important practice to Michael. That practice is to give a sincere word of appreciation.
In our industry travel comes with the territory. We experience the TSA often. Today, after reviewing Michael's ticket and handing him his ID, the TSA worker gave the customary "thank you." In kind, Michael replied "thank you very much." The TSA agent was rather taken back by his sincerity. But why?
Let's be honest, those TSA lines can provide a negative anchor for us flyers. People tend to complain when encountering the TSA line and agents. They have a tough job and constantly experience grumpy travelers. It's no wonder why a sincere "thank you" blows them away. Michael went on to deliver sincere appreciation for their work and commitment to the safety of the travelers.
What was the result of making someone's day by building them up in appreciation? Michael received the coveted red stamp. He received expedited boarding and walked on with the crew. A word of warning don't do unto others to receive something. Give your appreciation freely.
Today who can you give a sincere word of appreciation to? Do so and share the results. Share your story and comments below!
